Metal Roofing

A roof is one of the most important parts of any house.  It plays a big role in keeping everything under it safe from all forms of harm and natural calamities. More so, it has to be taken care of regularly to extend its lifespan. Roofing also comes as a matter of preference. There are those who prefer, shingle roofing whereas others prefer metal roofing. However, in all this, one has to consider the financial implication.

Varieties of Shingle and Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has different styles that largely depend on the metal used, and the coatings applied. Aluminum needs no coating, but steel must go through special treatment to keep rusting at bay. Titanium, zinc, stainless steel, and copper are also used in metal roofing. On the other hand, shingles have two varieties, which are the fiberglass shingles and the traditional organic shingles. The difference between these varieties is their layered make-up. Fiberglass shingles contain a fiberglass core covered in an asphalt layer. Organic shingles are heavily layered under the asphalt.

The Appearance of Both Roofs

The most popular types of asphalt shingles are their layered one, and you will find it in most homes. The reason is that most builders trust it and most homeowners are used to it. Shingles come in different colors that match the paint of the house. This means they have more color variety as opposed to metal roofing. For instance, the three-tab shingle gives a flat appearance as opposed to the more architectural shingle, which appears three-dimensional. Metal roofing is commonly found in urban areas, and their appearance is more suited in the agricultural setting. They also have a variety of colors and styles also to match the house. It can be in tiles, panels, or even shingles. However, the appearance of metal roofing may be awkward especially in an area populated by asphalt shingles.

Installation Process

The installation process of metal roofing is complex as opposed to shingle roofing. Insurance and warranty necessities may require the removal of the previous shingles. The installation of shingle roofing is less stressful, takes less time and labor depending on the size of the house. Note that the installation of both roofs should be left to roofing experts. This is because working on a roof is dangerous and installing the materials needs expertise.

The Durability of Shingle and Metal Roofing

Metal roofing will cost more partly because of its long-life expectancy.  A metal roof can go for 60 years and beyond with little maintenance. However, an asphalt shingle roof may have to be replaced twice or thrice within a sixty-year time span. Their warranty ranges from 20-50 years. Shingle roofing, especially the asphalt one is prone to high wind and hail damage, but fiberglass is more durable than the organic one. Without adequate sunlight, they mold, algae or mildew can accumulate on an asphalt shingle roof. Metal roofing performs better even in high winds and bad weather. They do not need sunlight because mold and algae, bugs or mildew cannot permeate. However, if the metal roofing is of low quality and lacks enough rust-resistant coating, using near salt water will be a bad move.
